Tanzania Mwika North Washed

Tanzania Mwika North Washed

from $22.00

New Math hasn’t sourced much Tanzania. Yet whenever we do, we’re impressed by the country’s potential to produce coffees that equals the great washed coffees from neighboring Rwanda and Kenya.

Lovely effervescent coffee, with generous citrus (grapefruit, lemon) and red fruit impressions (pomegranate). A bright cup that nevertheless feels accessible as a daily sipper.

This lot comes from about 180 smallholders organized around the Mwika North Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS). The co-op formed in 2013 as a breakaway from the larger Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union (KNCU). With support and training from the Technoserve-funded smallholder initiative Kilicafe, the Mwika North AMCOS was able to collect parchment and built its own centralized processing station. While AMCOS had to shutter when its funding ended, the co-op managed to resume and stabilize its processing operations from 2020 onward.
